Pat Masters

Mid-Century Memories
Documenting the Recent Past Award

It was with great foresight that Pat Masters took it upon herself to document a socially and historically groundbreaking housing development in the hills of La Jolla. While the architecture of this area is very significant, Scripps Estates Associates was the first subdivision to ignore the local real-estate covenants and sell property to people regardless of religion or ethnicity. Pat was able to do what historians documenting earlier periods have not had the luxury of doing, which is have the ability to speak with the residents who actually lived there. The recent past is an area that is extremely important and easily overlooked because of it being so recent.
