National Preservation Month
May 21 · 6-9:30pm · SOHO's 28th Annual People In Preservation Awards
SAN DIEGO, CA - May3, 2010 - Save Our Heritage Organisation celebrates the 28th anniversary of SOHO's People In Preservation awards, the region's most prestigious recognition in preservation held each year during National Preservation Month.
The 28th annual People In Preservation award winners are being recognized for the restoration of Balboa Park icons and neighborhood eyesores, for community efforts to preserve unique cultural landmarks and important open space, and for restoring historic homes.
And the winners are:
- Two Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to SOHO founders Robert Miles Parker of New York City, and Carol Lindemulder of Borrego Springs, close collaborators in organizing SOHO in 1969.
- State Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) will be honored as Preservationist of the Year. Kehoe was instrumental in arranging a significant land transfer from Caltrans that will expand Old Town San Diego State Historic Park by a 2.5 acres parcel that is considered vital to the interpretation of one of San Diego's earliest and most coveted settlement sites along the San Diego River.
Public participation in protecting our multicultural heritage is on the rise, as can be seen from the number of groups selected for awards this year. Among them are:
- Brothers United, a group of current and former African-American firefighters, and Jennifer Hirsch of the City of San Diego Planning Department - Historic Rescue Award for adding the once racially segregated Fire Station #19 to the city's roster of historic landmarks.
- Friends of Friendship Park, a large coalition of religious, environmental and peace groups - People in the Trenches Award for ongoing opposition to the federal closure of a popular bi-national park bisected by the new triple fence on the San Diego-Tijuana border.
- BeHi, or Between Heights, a San Diego neighborhood group - Community Champions Award for preserving three historic homes at Our Lady of Peace Academy and solidifying neighborhood ties.
- Gary Fogel and the Torrey Pines Soaring Council - Cliffhanger Award for efforts to protect Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla from encroachment.
- Ann Garwood and Nancy Moors - Town Crier Award for spearheading awareness of historic Hillcrest through the guidebook HillQuest, the Web site HillQuest.com and the Hillcrest History Guild.
Other awards honor people who preserved public buildings and houses. They include:
- Stacy LoMedico and the City of San Diego Parks Department - the Landmark Achievements in Restoration Award for repairing and renewing façades of the California Building and Tower and the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park.
- John Anderson, Lucy Contreras, and the Centre City Development Corporation - Gift to the Street Award for rehabilitating and authentically repainting a city-owned, 1907 Craftsman-style building in East Village before a tenant was found.
- Robert M. McLeod - Adaptive Reuse Award for rescuing a neglected Craftsman bungalow in Mission Hills for his law office.
- Bryan and Jora Vess - Residential Restoration Award for a Mid-Century Modern house on Mount Helix restored with input from the original architect, John Mock.
Bruce Coons, Executive Director of SOHO explains the importance of the ceremonies, "By honoring those who have invested in San Diego's future by preserving its historic sites, it raises awareness of the important role that San Diegans play in the preservation of our region's heritage. It is efforts like those that will be honored, that help maintain a sense of place in the San Diego region."
The event is open to the public; SOHO invites all San Diegans and lovers of San Diego's history to help celebrate the individuals, organizations and projects whose dedication, determination and tireless efforts in the field of historic preservation are invaluable to preserving our county's heritage.
The awards event is held at the Temple Beth Israel in Heritage Park, 2454 Heritage Park Row in Old Town San Diego. Ticket includes heavy hors d'oeuvres and cocktail reception before the awards ceremony. Cocktail attire is suggested.
