Red Rest and Red Roost (1894)

Most Endangered 2005These two La Jolla Cove cottages are widely recognized as the progenitors to the California Bungalow. Listed on the National Register in the 1970âs, they have suffered greatly in the past 30 years from ownersâ neglect, but with new family members taking the ownership reins, there finally may be light at the end of the tunnel. A development plan incorporating the cottages is underway and the owners have taken steps to stop the deterioration in the meantime. SOHO has suspended legal action and continues to meet with the family during the development process. The owners have recently commissioned a historic structures report, which is a promising next step.
