Lecturer Bios

Melinda GándaraMelinda Gandara
Melinda Gándara is currently an archivist at the Architectural Design Collection of the University Art Museum at University of California Santa Barbara. Through Getty grant funding, she assisted in the arrangement and description of the Cliff May Collection and is currently working on the papers of David Gebhard. She received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in the history of art and architecture from University of California Santa Barbara. She has written and lectured on contemporary art and is currently assisting in the upcoming exhibition, Carefree California: Cliff May and Romance of the Ranch, scheduled to open at the University Art Museum at University of California Santa Barbara in January 2012.

Mary van BalgooyMary van Balgooy
Executive Director of Peerless Rockville, Mary van Balgooy is one of the leading preservation organizations in Maryland. Previously, she served in management positions at several institutions including Collections Manager at the Supreme Court of the United States, Public Programs Manager at the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum, and Historic Preservation Officer for Riverside County. A native Californian, Mary first became interested in Cliff May while writing her master's thesis, "Women and Domestic Architecture in Cold War America: Cliff May's California Ranch House Designs." After graduating from Claremont Graduate University, Mary published an award-winning article, "Designer of the Dream: Cliff May and the California Ranch House" in the Southern California Quarterly in 2004. She is currently researching May's formative career in San Diego.
