Marston House Garden Wall Restored
September/October 2019

In 2005, before SOHO began operating the Marston House Museum & Gardens, a large limb from a eucalyptus tree fell onto one of the garden walls, knocking out several layers of original brick and creating a gaping hole. This restoration project has been on SOHO's priority list for the last decade, and now, thanks to the City of San Diego (which is responsible for the gardens and grounds upkeep) and general contractor Bill Smith of Smith & Moser, Inc., mission accomplished!

In early 2019, SOHO began assessing various elements that could affect this project, such as weather, special events, and the recently installed adopt-a-plot herb garden. Once the rainy season finally ended and the masonry had dried out, restoration could start, using salvaged brick. Smith's team had to work around scheduled events, such as weddings and SOHO's annual People In Preservation awards ceremony, to maintain the tranquil ambiance of the Marston grounds. We appreciated that the team also took great care to allow volunteer gardeners access to the herb garden and protected plants during the project.

Be sure to check out this well-done wall restoration (and herb garden) the next time you're strolling around the Marston House or visiting Balboa Park.
