The Marston House is cultivating a new herb garden thanks to the Adopt-A-Plot program of the Friends of Balboa Park, our great oak has been carefully pruned of much dead weight, and the exterior trim is being repainted.
The new herb garden, initiated and generously funded by our Seventh Avenue neighbors David Lubs and Bonnie Scott, is based on what Marston House Historian Sarai Johnson believes was growing here during the last Marston period, when daughter Mary donated the estate to the City of San Diego in 1989. This lovely, fragrant bed near the formal gardens includes rows of rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme, and oregano, all especially chosen by our thoughtful benefactors.
Heavily and properly pruned, the majestic oak tree, which stands sentinel at the Marston House's front entrance, is estimated to be over 80 years old. The removal of a large limb that was threatening the porte cochère's newly shingled roof will help this dignified tree thrive for years to come.
Much needed maintenance of structures is being done by the city. Painters are refurbishing the failing paint on the house's exterior wooden stairs, trim and windows, and the garden gate once again swings open and shut. Soon the fallen garden wall damaged by a eucalyptus limb in 2015 will also be repaired.
SOHO is grateful to our supportive neighbors, the Friends of Balboa Park Adopt-A-Plot program, and the City of San Diego for this exciting 2019 refreshment to start the new year off right.
