The Henry B. Jones House, designated by the City of San Diego Historical Resources Board in 2009, is an excellent architectural example of the Arts and Crafts era and was once home to the first president of Hillcrest's first bank. An appeal was filed immediately after designation, but it was never brought to the City Council because SOHO and other community stakeholders were working with Scripps Mercy Hospital to find a way to preserve this historic resource on their property.
In 2018, the house was moved from 4040 Fifth Avenue to 4114 Ibis Street (find more information on the relocation). The Catholic Diocese of San Diego is responsible for rehabilitating the interior for St. Vincent de Paul priests in Mission Hills. However, since the City does not have a legal mechanism to withdraw a designation appeal, the City Council heard this one on April 22. The members unanimously upheld this designation, at the request of Scripps Mercy Hospital, thanks to the win-win solution that included designation, relocation, and the adaptive reuse of this important historical resource. One of Hillcrest's oldest and handsomest Arts and Crafts houses is now secure, albeit in Mission Hills.
