Continuing to monitor the North Chapel situation, SOHO joined several other advocates at the City Council on November 13, 2018, where Councilmember Bry supported our request asking the City Attorney to investigate the situation and provide a formal opinion. Thank you Councilmember Barbara Bry for being a champion of the North Chapel!
The January 18 opinion from the Office of the City Attorney says that the owner of the ground lease must comply with the Naval Training Center Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties as well as the Secretary of the Interior Standards. It also explains a Site Development Permit would be required for any project that is not consistent with these Standards or Guidelines. This process would require a recommendation from the Historical Resources Board to either the Planning Commission or City Council, depending upon the scope of the project, who would make the final decision.
Currently, the North Chapel is now closed to the public and the two church tenants are gathering elsewhere, which leaves the chapel without any public oversight, a concern to many stakeholders including SOHO. Please help SOHO in keeping a vigilant eye on this important historical resource; and if any interior or exterior modifications are being done, please contact SOHO immediately.
