Update: North Chapel in Liberty Station
By A. Hayes
November/December 2018
SOHO continues to monitor the Corky McMillin Company and its attempt to turn the North Chapel in Liberty Station, a sacred and historic site to many San Diegans, into a restaurant or other inappropriate use (Read more).
Thanks to the investigative reporting of Jeff McDonald in the San Diego Union-Tribune, we now know that McMillin has sold its ground lease to Pendulum Property Partners, a bold move that may not have followed the correct protocol with the City of San Diego. Regardless, this deal leaves the future of the historic North Chapel in the care of a new manager.
The inside scoop is that prior to its purchase of the ground lease, Pendulum knew nothing about the controversy surrounding a new use for the chapel, or the large community interest and involvement in this issue. Councilmember Zapf made an initial effort to get at the details of how this happened without any public discussion. Perhaps a new managing partner could mean a brighter, respectful future for the North Chapel? In the meantime, as SOHO continues to watch this situation, please contact Councilmember Lorie Zapf at loriezapf@sandiego.gov to express your concern for the future use of the North Chapel.
