A1: 10am - 1pm

View more than thirty of San Diego's premier bungalow courts, in styles ranging from California bungalow to Spanish Revival, Moorish Revival, Pueblo and Moderne. Bungalow courts are one of the most beloved icons of the Southern California lifestyle during the streetcar era; SOHO is delighted to present this program for the fourth year to acquaint San Diegans with the wealth of bungalow courts remaining intact in our city.

With a Masters Degree in Public History from USD, Jaye Furlonger is an authority on San Diego's bygone Hollywood Burlesque Theatre and works as an architectural historian for IS Architecture in La Jolla.

Bonnie Poppe is a historic homeowner, restorationist and preservation advocate.

Saturday

$30 for SOHO Members · $40 for non-members
Tour Guide: Ron May
10am-1pm (Boarding at 9:45am)
Note: Some walking will be required

This is an opportunity to visit one of San Diego's most private military bases to view some of its most historic buildings. Among the highlights will be the 1904-1905 Colonial Revival Officers Quarters and Bachelor Enlisted Quarters, the 1919 U.S. Navy Argonaut Hall, the 1915 U.S. Army Battery White, the 1898 Battery Wilkeson and several other sites on the Point Loma Sub base. This unique tour will include an exceedingly rare walk-through of one of the Senior Officer's Quarters.

An architectural research historian and author, Ron May is President and co-founder of Legacy 106, Inc. and Chairman of the Fort Guijarros Museum Foundation.

Tour C - San Diego's Historic Tile
$40 for SOHO Members · $50 for non-members
Tour Guides: Joseph A. Taylor & Sheila A. Menzies
2-6pm (Boarding at 1:45pm)

Tiles shaped much of Southern California's architecture and design through the early part of the 20th century. Along with the Expo's design influence, home decorating magazines, real estate developers and furniture manufacturers made Spanish, Mexican and Moorish themes the most popular style for California homeowners at that time. Considered functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, tiles were used extensively to clad benches, form fountain spouts and basins, and as stair risers both indoors and out. Visit private homes to view their tile features and public sites, some well known, others not as well known.

A frequent writer and lecturer on tile history, Joseph Taylor is president and cofounder of the Tile Heritage Foundation.

A craftswoman and mixed media artist, Sheila Menzies is a board member and cofounder of the Tile Heritage Foundation.

Note: There is a Historic Tile lecture at 11am. This is separate from the tour and priced separately.

Sunday

Tour D - Tiki:
A Guide to San Diego's Tiki Modern Architecture

$50 for SOHO Members · $65 for non-members
Tour Guides: Alex Bevil & Jaye Furlonger
2-7pm (Boarding at 1:45am)

Join urban archaeologists on a guided tour in search of San Diego's Tiki temples. More than ten diverse sites will be featured, culminating in a short presentation on Tiki and cocktail party at the Bali Hai, and a chance to mingle with local historians to talk about the city's unique Tiki Modern architecture.

Alex Bevil is a California State Parks historian, adjunct professor of the San Diego New School of Architecture and Design, and author of several award-winning articles on San Diego's architectural and military history in the Journal of San Diego History.

With a Masters Degree in Public History from USD, Jaye Furlonger is an authority on San Diego's bygone Hollywood Burlesque Theatre and works as an architectural historian for IS Architecture in La Jolla.

Tour E - Historic Home Tour
10am-4pm (Trolley & self-driven)
$25 for SOHO Members · $35 for non-members

SOHO honors the community of Mission Hills as it celebrates its 100th birthday by focusing our attention on just a few of its architectural and historically important private residences. Five homes in all are included of various styles and periods. In keeping with the theme of celebrating Mission Hills the centennial year, two of the most popular homes from the past years of special Mission Hills Heritage tours in which only a couple hundred visitors had the opportunity to view them have been selected, along with three never viewed before sites. SOHO has not held a tour in Mission Hills for over five years; we invite you to join us in honoring their centennial with us.

Tour can be self-driven or you can relax and take the trolley we provide for attendees at no additional charge. Click HERE for a glimpse at the homes on the tour.

Old Town has plentiful free parking. Please look at the map to see the many parking areas. Also, the trolley and train are at the Old Town Transit Center, just four blocks away from the SOHO headquarters, and as always we encourage public transportation and carpooling.
