Presidio Park
2811 Jackson Street, Old Town San Diego
The park is still waiting for the City of San Diego to honor the national significance of this historic, cultural and archaeological site with proper and consistent maintenance as well as a master plan that outlines priorities for this entire national landmark.
There is some good news since our initial listing in 2016 that called attention to problems. The Serra Museum in the park has been awarded a restoration grant for critically needed exterior painting and the arbor entrance to the park was restored in 2018 by Mission Hills Heritage. Read HERE.
Further, the City's new Parks Master Plan includes a goal to develop master plans for its National Historic Landmark parks, but impairing this is a lack of stewardship, investment, and attention to the entire Presidio Park. For example, the nationally significant archaeological collection has never been indexed. Meanwhile, the proposed parking lot and ADA path project continues to move forward through the environmental review process, and revised reports will be submitted in the coming months. This parking and path project will not only adversely impact the site of the casamata (fort), which was constructed on higher ground to defend the presidio, but also forever alter and destroy the historic setting and landscape of this national landmark. SOHO continues to assert the City must modify the project to adhere to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards or prepare a full Environmental Impact Report.
