Rancho Guajome Adobe
|
RANCHO GUAJOME HACIENDA depicts a unique example of Anglo-Hispanic architecture built on an original Mexican land grant. Distinguished as a National Historic Landmark for its contribution to our nation's history, the rambling twenty-room adobe ranch house, built with huge profits from the cattle boom of the 1850's, bustled in its heyday with extravagant fiestas, lively rodeos, and constant visitors. Beginning in the 1970s, the county undertook a major rehabilitation of the property, which was completed in 1996. It is now the centerpiece of a 112-acre county park. Built in 1852-1853, the large, one-story adobe hacienda with a double courtyard occupies land that was once part of the Spanish San Luis Rey Mission. Rancho Guajome is a rare intact site, with the main house and service buildings still standing—including the jail, blacksmith shop, horse stalls, carriage house, harness room, family chapel, servants' house, barns, and sheds.
