FIREPLACES, CHIMNEYS & STOVES

Note: Fireplaces are a character-defining feature of your home. Anytime it is recommended that you cover your original fireplace with new tile, even beautiful historic style tile, you should resist this very damaging trend. Most hearths were level with the floor, making the hearth higher is non-historic; it is not necessary and it is a modern addition for your old home. Your chimney top is important; adding a damper & spark arrester above the top of your chimney is almost always unnecessary and alters the historic look of your home. Unless your chimney had one originally, it should be added to the inside of your chimney, where is it not visible.
