Yucca filifera chabaud
Asparagaceae family
Southeast Mexico/Central America
A really very interesting yucca, this species can reach heights of 30 feet. First described by J. Benjamin Chabaud (1833-1915) in 1876. Native to central northeastern Mexico, Yucca filifera chabaud has a distinctly pendulous inflorescence formation. These are not widely found. However, Balboa Park has a large cluster growing to the north of the Lawn Bowling Club. Presidio Park has two large specimens flourishing in front of the Serra Museum. Based on size and location it is reasonable to assume that both groups were planted at the same approximate time and likely by or under the influence of Kate O. Session and Percy Broell, Presidio Park Superintendent during the late 1920s or early 1930s.
