Presidio Park Plant Survey

Washingtonia robusta

MEXICAN FAN PALM

Arecaceae family Mexico

Originally endemic to the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California, the Mexican fan palm was first believed to have been brought to the Los Angeles area for the 1932 Summer Olympics and is a landmark palm of the Southern California region. Many of those palms still line the streets of Los Angeles and are considered fully mature and at their height of development. Washingtonia robusta is a very tall, slender palm reaching heights of 80-100 feet. These palms can, and often do hybridize producing interesting hybrids. The Mexican fan palm can be found throughout the desert regions of the southwest United States but have also been introduced to the Canary Islands, Spain, New Zealand, and Florida. Presidio Park has multiple tall and old specimens, of heights of 80 or more feet in Palm Canyon where one can also find several other palm species thriving.
