Mainly a Mexican species these large trees, growing up to heights of 130 feet can be found in riparian environments or near spring and marshes. The national tree of Mexico since 1910 Taxodium distichum is revered by the locals. Many trees can grow much wider than the average and in fact the Montezuma cypress can grow to astounding widths. One specimen in Mexico has a diameter of 38 feet.
