Syagrus romanzoffiana

QUEEN PALM

Arecaceae family N Argentina/NE Brazil/Bolivia

A medium sized palm the Syagrus romanzoffiana, or queen palm can reach heights of up to 50 feet. Endemic to warm and wet subtropical regions of Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia it also thrives well in drier Mediterranean climates such as Southern California. The queen palm has become so prolific and popular in Southern California many mistakenly believe it to be a native. Planted in Presidio Park by Percy Broell in the late 1920s under the former name of Cocos plumosa the two original trees can still be found near the intersection of Presidio Drive and Taylor Street.
