Presidio Park Plant Survey

Sequoia sempervirens

COAST REDWOOD

Cupressaceae family N California/Oregon (coastal)

A native of coastal southern Oregon and northern California these giants are arguably the largest living trees on the planet. Historically, Sequoia sempervirens had a larger habitat area but is now restricted to its current coastal region where they grow in a moist environment offering moderate to heavy winter rainfall and cooling summer fog. These massive trees can reach heights of more than 300 feet and have bark that is up to 12 inches thick. Heavily harvested in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to the immense amount of high quality lumber produced, they are now a protected species. Presidio Park has several 60-foot specimens but these have suffered due to San Diego's dry climate, and some have died and have had to be removed.
