Salvia greggi
AUTUMN SAGE
Lamiaceae family
S Texas/N central Mexico
Endemic to a narrow strip of higher altitudes (5,000-9,000 feet) from southwest Texas into the Chihuahuan Desert of Northern Mexico. This shrub reaches heights of 4 feet and displays delicate flowers of various colors on stalks raising from the green, bush-like structure. First described by Asa Grey in 1870, the specific epithet is given in honor of Josiah Gregg (1806-1850) explorer of the northern Mexican and southwest United States region. In Presidio Park Salvia greggii has been growing in the same location that Percy Broell planted it in the mid 1930s.
