Requiring well drained soil, full sun, and needing little water, this native of Southern California and northern Baja California coastal ranges is extremely drought tolerant. Salvia apiana reaches heights of 3-5 feet, displays white to purple flowers in late spring or early summer and has been used by indigenous peoples for flour, flavoring and religious purposes.
