Presidio Park Plant Survey

Rosa laevigata

CHEROKEE ROSE

Rosaceae family SE Asia/Taiwan, Laos, Vietnam

The Cherokee rose is in fact not native to any American Indian territories. It originates in Southeast Asia, specifically Taiwan, Laos and Vietnam, and was imported into the United States in 1780 where it quickly became naturalized in the southeast United States. After that time, it came to symbolically represent the Trail of Tears of the Cherokee nation, and other indigenous tribes, when relocated by U.S. agencies in the early 1800s. It is a beautiful white rose that can effectively scramble or climb. Rosa laevigata is mentioned by Percy Broell in 1937 but not in Chauncy Jerabek's plant identification of 1969. Presidio Park's single clump of Rosa laevigata may be an original planting dating back to the late 1920s.
