Rosa bracteata hybrid ROSA MERMAID
William Paul began the work of raising the Rosa bracteata but his son finished the hybridizing of the rose and presented it to the world in 1918, thirteen years after his father began the work. Displaying soft fragrant yellow spring to early summer flowers, reaching maximum heights of 25 feet in ideal growing conditions, it can be a climber or a scrambler. English horticulturist William Paul (1822-1905) is best known for his rosarian achievements and was elected Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1875. He wrote many books but perhaps his most influential was, The Rose Garden, which was first published in 1848, and reached its tenth edition in 1903, has enjoyed the unique fortune of maintaining a pre-eminent authority for sixty years. Presidio Park's specimens are not mentioned by Percy Broell (1937) or Chauncy Jerabek (1969), indicating they may have been planted sometime thereafter. |
