Quercus agrifolia
COAST LIVE OAK
Fagaceae family
Central Southern California (coastal)
This coastal California native oak can reach grand heights of up to 70 feet but it is more common to see Quercus agrifolia in the 40 to 50-foot range. In its natural habitat groves form with large merging canopies and thick twisted branches supported by single trunks. The coast live oak may send a tap root down to 35 feet if groundwater can be reached.
Extremely well suited for drought conditions Quercus agrifolia can live between 40 and 110 years normally, but older specimens of 250 years of age have been documented. The coastal live oak was indicated by both Percy Broell and Chauncy Jerabek in 1937 and 1969, respectively.
