Prunus ilicifolia ssp. lyonii
CATALINA CHERRY
Rosaceae family
Channel Islands
This medium sized native can be seen as a shrub or tree in its natural environment but can be trained into a hedge in cultivation. The leaves are dissimilar to the hollyleaf cherry in that they lack the serrated borders and are more glossy. The red fruits are edible and have been used traditionally by native peoples. Endemic to the coastal islands of California's coast it is naturally drought tolerant and a good choice for water-conscience landscapes.
