Endemic to coastal central and southern California as well as coastal Baja California this hardy medium sized fruit bearing tree was used by indigenous peoples for various uses. It produces a red to black fruit that is edible. The genus Prunus in Latin means plum-like, and ilicifolia refers to the holly-like appearance of the leaves of Prunus ilicifolia and is an important component of the chaparral ecosystem of California.
