Native to the wet highlands of the Drakensberg Mountains of southern and eastern South Africa it has been imported to temperate and warm climates around the world. A striking tree that when fully grown can reach heights of 90 feet, with long drooping thin leaves and a pyramidal shape. The species epithet was given in honor of Dr. J.S. Henkel (1871-1962) conservator of Cape Province and KwaZulu-Natal forests, and later the Director of the Forestry of Zimbabwe.
