An evergreen shrub that that can reach heights of 10 feet, although they usually do not get that high in Southern California without assistance, instead Plumbago auriculata is usually found between 4-6 feet. This South African native is not mentioned by Percy Broell but is noted in the 1969 Chauncy Jerabek plant identification. The species name was given by French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829) in 1786. In Latin auriculata means "with ears" referring to the shape of the leaves.
