Plectranthus ornatus

DOG BANE (SYN. COLEUS CANNIS)

Lamiaceae family S Africa (E Cape N to Natal)

A hardy plant from eastern South Africa to Natal, Plectranthus ornatus gives off a pungent smell that is thought to repel animals such as skunks, rabbits, cats, and dogs. It has a ground cover like growth habit that can thrive in dry conditions and poor soils. It does produce an interesting bluish lavender flower.
