Pittosporum tobira
MOCK ORANGE
Pittosporaceae family
Japan/Korea/China
An import from southeast Asia, specifically Japan, the Pittosporum tobira receives its species name from the Japanese word meaning 'door' or 'opening'. Very common in warmer or mild climates these are usually grown as hedges but can overtime be trained as trees. Pittosporum tobira is mentioned in both plant identifications from 1937 and 1969. Presidio Park has numerous Japanese mock orange shrubs in the park but also has one very old P. tobira that is a tree reaching about 20 feet in height. This particular tree is likely an original planting by Percy Broell in the late 1920s.
