Pinus thunbergiana
JAPANESE BLACK PINE
Pinaceae family
Japan
A native of Japan, Pinus thunbergiana has been imported around the world. It is widely used for bonsai creation but left to grow naturally it can reach heights of 100 feet in its native habitat but in cultivation outside of Japan it usually attains heights of 20-40 feet. It is irregular in shape and noted for its soft-white terminal buds. The epithet honors Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), 19th century Swedish physician and botanist, apprentice to Carl Linnaeus, and sometimes called the "Japanese Linnaeus."
