Pinus sabiniana
DIGGER PINE/GREY PINE
Pinaceae family
California foothills
Native to inland and coastal west facing mid-altitude mountain ranges from central California to Northern California it is not common in the San Diego ranges and may be considered one of the least likely plants to thrive in Presidio Park's micro climate. With heights of up to 60 feet Pinus sabiniana can be crooked or straight. Native peoples utilized the roots for weaving and the fruit, or pine nuts, were prized. Another of the scientific descriptions by Professor of Botany David Don in the 1830s, the grey pine is noted in the 1969 plant identification of Chauncy Jerabek but not in the earlier 1937 documentation by Percy Broell. Currently, the single Presidio Park Pinus sabiniana specimen has taken on an odd but interesting formation.
