Presidio Park Plant Survey

Pinus radiata

MONTEREY PINE

Pinaceae family Central California coast

Endemic to a very small geographic strip of Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Luis Obispo's California foggy coastal region, the Pinus radiata can today be found around the world on coastal foggy hillsides in New Zealand, Southern Australia, Chile, and South Africa for example. First described in 1835 by David Don, professor of botany in London, however, the species may have been first removed and transplanted outside of its native environment as early as 1787 by the La Pérouse expedition who took seeds back to Europe. Pinus radiata was likely used for the building of the Carmel Mission in 1769. Presidio Park's collection are few, and may be suffering from poor growing conditions, but the tallest specimen may be about 60 feet tall and are mentioned in Percy Broell's 1937 plant identification.
