Presidio Park Plant Survey

Pinus pinea

ITALIAN STONE PINE

Pinaceae family S Europe/Italy/Turkey/Lebanon

When mature this umbrella shaped medium to large tree can grow to heights of 60 feet or more. They display a majestic crown and offer an edible pinyon nut that is considered among the best pine nuts in the world by some. Traditional uses include turpentine, building material, and dye, and the fruit(nut) is used as an aphrodisiac. Pinus pinea does best near milder coastal climates with moderate temperature variations. European records indicate historical culinary interest dating back to at least the 1400s. Presidio Park's specimens are beautiful and majestic and were likely planted by Percy Broell under the direction of George Marston in the 1920s.
