Pinus eldarica
AFGHAN PINE
Pinaceae family
S Russia/Afghanistan/Pakistan
The Afghan pine has a documented history dating back at least 2500 years, as found in the writings of the cultures of its native ecosystem of the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russian, Afghanistan, and Pakistan regions. Sometimes referred to as Pinus brutia it is a symmetrical tree reaching heights of 50 feet, it thrives in desert climates best but grows well in more watered locations like city parks and golf courses. This species did not become popular in the United States until the 1960s so it is assumed that Presidio Park's specimens date from approximately that period, though they are not mentioned in the 1969 Chauncy Jerabek plant identification.
