Presidio Park Plant Survey

Pinus canarienses

CANARY ISLAND PINE

Pinaceae family Canary Islands

The Pinus canariensis is a large tree growing to heights of 120 feet, and occasionally in its native environment of the Canary Islands, reaching heights of 180 feet. On the Canary Islands there are only a handful of natural forest groves left, this due mostly to over harvesting. Considered a good hardwood the tree has many uses. Living up to 150 years Pinus canariensis is tolerant of various climate conditions including drought. They are known to dust the area with yellow spring pollen. First scientifically described by Norwegian botanist Christen Smith (1785-1816), Smith went on to describe some 600 other plants but died at the young age of 30 on an expedition in the Congo. Presidio Park's collection is impressive and was likely planted in the 1920s with guidance from Kate O. Session and were noted in both the 1937 Percy Broell and 1969 Chauncy Jerabek's plant identifications.
