Phoenix sylvestris
SILVER DATE PALM
Arecaceae family
India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka
Native to southern Pakistan and most of India, the silver date palm grows to heights of 40 feet in the plains and scrublands of these regions. A relatively fast grower of 1.5 feet per year, the Phoenix sylvestris produces fruit used to make jellies, and the trunk provides sap to concoct palm wine. Usually growing with a single solitary trunk, the species epitaph is derived from the Latin word for 'wild'. Phoenix sylvestris is considered a hardy palm handling low temperatures, high heat and once established, drought.
