Phoenix canariensis
CANARY ISLAND PALM
Arecaceae family
Canary Islands
These very large and slow growing palms line streets all over the world. For more than a century they have been sought after as stately status symbols. Today a large Phoenix canariensis is still a source of pride for the owners. However, this native of the Canary Islands has escaped cultivation and has become a weed in some open spaces, canyons, and marshes. It produces large masses of frond clutter with long piercing spines beneath the crown, and they are very difficult to remove. Nonetheless, Phoenix canariensis is a grand palm.
