Developed in the early 1900s as fodder for cattle by Luther Burbank (1849-1926), famed horticulturist, in central California, this hybrid of Opuntia ficus-indica can be found in cultivation worldwide. Luther Burbank produced more than 800 plant varieties and hybrids, including more than 60 Opuntia hybrids. The Burbank grows similar to the parent plant except that it grows more compact and slightly denser.
