This extremely popular cactus species has a long history of human cultivation and use. It has edible qualities, medicinal qualities, and practical qualities (dye, hedges, etc). Its origin is unknown for certain and is debated. Opuntia ficus-indica is thought to have originated in the central Mexico region and brought back to Europe in the 1500s by Spanish explorers. Presidio Park has two variations of Opuntia ficus-indica. The first being the native or original form referred to as O. ficus-indica. The second being a hybrid with fewer spines, called O. ficus-indica var. Burbank.
