This Oaxaca, Mexico native growing naturally from coastal areas up to the higher altitudes, is not considered endangered although it is threatened in its native coastal areas. Sometimes called nopalea auberi, this Opuntia produces a unique spring or summer blossom. It produces a stamen that protrudes twice the length from a scarlet or crimson enclosed flower, from pads that are elongated and thin. First described by German botanist, physician and conch expert, for which he is best known, Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer (1805-1877 ).
