Olea europaea
OLIVE
Oleaceae family
S Europe to E Mediterranean
Dispersed throughout the worlds Mediterranean climates the Olea europaea is one of the few trees found documented throughout recorded history, with references dating back thousands of years. A vital tree for its fruit and for the products derived thereof. It is commonly thought that the olive tree was among the first imported plants into the California region, possibly brought by Franciscan friar Junípero Serra. Several older specimens grow around the Serra Museum and were likely planted around the time of the museum's 1929 completion.
