Liriodendron tulipifera
TULIP TREE
Magnoliaceae family
E United States
The state tree of Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee, Liriodendron tulipifera can be found throughout the eastern United States and southern Canada, from Ontario to Louisiana. These large trees represent one of the two-member Liriodendron genus and can reach heights of more than 100 feet. Its flower is produced in early spring and resembles a tulip, thus its common name. The tulip tree offers a soft wood suitable for some furniture, house siding and for use in sculptures and wood carvings. Presidio Park's single specimen is a large, mature example of Liriodendron tulipifera.
