Liquidambar orientalis
SWEET GUM
Altingiaceae family
Southern Turkey
Liquidambar orientalis is one of five members of the Liquidambar genus, which can grow to heights 130 feet tall. The species orientalis is endemic to southwest Turkey and the Greek island of Rhodes and is an important component to the local economies there. In its native habitat a resin or oil is produced from its sap in a month's long process which is used medicinally to produce a product called Storax used for multiple homeopathic and medical, perfumery and soap purposes.
The seed pod is unique and known by many as it is globolus in structure with numerous spines that protrude from its surface. Its leaf structure also causes it to often be confused with the maple tree.
