First described by famed botanist Carl Linnaeus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is actually not closely related to the rosa genus. The Hibiscus family contains more than 200 varieties and has been cross-breed numerous times. Flourishing in warmer tropical and subtropical climates, it is thought that the Hibiscus species originated in southeast China.
