Heteromeles arbutifolia
TOYON/CALIFORNIA HOLLY
Rosaceae family
CA/ N Baja (coastal)
This evergreen, California native species is an important part of Southern California's chaparral ecosystem. In winter, it produces large clusters of bright red berries and has often been referred to as Christmas berry or California holly. It is said that in the 1920s, due to its abundance in the hills around Los Angeles, it was from Heteromeles arbutifolia that Hollywood got its name. Being native to the Southern California region Heteromeles arbutifolia was most certainly occurring naturally in Presidio Park when George Marston hired Park Superintendent Percy Broell who apparently incorporated this native (photinia arbutifolia) into the landscape design as indicated by his 1937 plant identification.
