Grevillea robusta
SILK OAK
Proteaceae family
Extreme SW South Africa
A fast growing and large tree, the Grevillea robusta can reach heights of 115 feet. A native of coastal east Australia it produces flowers similar to a bottle-brush. Before taking charge of the Sydney Botanical Gardens in 1836, Allan Cunningham first described Grevillea robusta in Australia in 1830. It is a strong wood, disease resistant, and a source of yellow and green dyes which can be obtained from its leaves. The silk oak is now common throughout Southern California which may be a result of the efforts of horticulturist Kate O. Sessions.
