Ginkgo biloba
GINKGO, MAIDENHAIR TREE
Ginkgoaceae family
China
The maidenhair tree is considered a living fossil and a unique species with no known living relatives. It is in a class of its own. A very large tree, this China native can reach heights of 160 feet and can live for thousands of years. Their deep and golden fall colors are spectacular, and the leaves are very unique forming an irregular lobed fan shape, distinctive to the plant world. Ginkgo biloba has been cultivated and used for medicinal and culinary purposes in China for at least 1500 years, but the first European documentation was in 1771 by the famed Father of Taxonomy, Carl Linnaeus.
