Ficus watkinsiana
STRANGLER FIG
Moraceae family
ENE Australia (coastal)
Sometimes called a strangler fig, this large tree exists in its native Australia along the wet coastal strip of northeast Australia. Its habit of growing onto, around, and enveloping structures, including other trees, is how it gets its common name. The species name refers to George Watkins (1848-1916) whom, after arriving in Queensland, Australia from England in 1867, worked as a pharmaceutical dispenser at an asylum on Stradbroke Island. He was an avid plant collector and naturalist. Botanist and curator, Frederick M. Bailey named this Ficus after Watkins in 1891.
