A small tree or shrub the Feijoa sellowiana produces an interesting flower and tasty fruit. The fruit resembles a chicken egg in size and is compared to a mix between a strawberry and a pineapple in flavor. Although native to the highlands of South America it is cultivated throughout the world for its fruit and has many culinary uses. German botanist Otto Carl Berg named this species after Brazilian born Portuguese botanist Joao da Silva Feijoa in the mid 1800s.
