Eucalyptus sideroxylon
PINK/RED IRONBARK
Myrtaceae family
High elevation, SW Australia (upland slopes)
Medium sized Eucalyptus sideroxylon can reach heights of 90 feet and produce flowers of white, pink, or red. The pink and red varieties are more common in cultivation. This ironbark has distinctive dark brown or black bark and is suitable for various soil and climate types. Sideroxylon is Latin for "having wood like iron." It is considered a hard, dense wood and is used for construction and popular for boat building, because it polishes to an attractive sheen.
Paradoxically, it is so dense it is one of the few woods that will not float, thus it is popularly used in the construction of piers. The majority of Presidio Parks Eucalyptus sideroxylon are located in the "Eucalyptus Grove" south of the Serra Museum.
